Title: Stories from Greenland -insights into why Greenlanders get type 2 diabetes and how they have genetically adapted to the Arctic.
Abstract:
I will talk about a few recent genetic studies of the Greenlandic population, which highlight how useful it can be to study small populations like the Greenlandic both for medical geneticists and for population geneticists. This includes a study that reveals the genetic cause of up to 15% of all type 2 diabetes cases in Greenland as well as a study that gives new insight into how humans have adapted to their environment - in this case the Arctic.
Additionally, I will briefly discuss some of the challenges that can come along with studying such populations in terms of methodology - and how to solve them.
